Digital Technologies in Mathematics Education

A 12-week course that treats Generative AI as an active teaching collaborator — alongside GeoGebra and CODAP — and grades the way great teaching actually happens: through visible, continuous effort.

The Big Picture

SCED 470 trains pre-service mathematics teachers to design technology-rich instruction in which Generative AI is treated as an active teaching collaborator, not an add-on — used side by side with dynamic geometry (GeoGebra) and data-exploration (CODAP) environments to plan, differentiate, and assess mathematics learning for K–12 students. You choose your own grade band — elementary, middle, or high school — for every task; the course defaults to middle/high, but elementary is completely fine if you prefer it.

The course extends TPACK and SAMR into an "AI-TPACK" stance, and structures its objectives around the three progression levels of UNESCO's 2024 AI Competency Framework for Teachers — Acquire → Deepen → Create — moving from foundational tool fluency (Weeks 1–4) to genuine AI co-design of differentiated tasks (Weeks 5–9) to an independently designed unit across the 12-week course (Weeks 10–12), publicly defended the following week at the Week 13 Capstone Showcase.

The Three-Pillar Toolkit

GeoGebra

Dynamic geometry, algebra, and function visualization — build objects students can drag, explore, and notice patterns in.

CODAP

Data exploration and statistical reasoning — ask a question of real data and let evidence answer it.

Generative AI

ChatGPT, Gemini, NotebookLM, etc. — a co-planning, differentiation, and formative-assessment partner you direct, not a ghostwriter.

Grades Are Earned, Not Assigned

Traditional weighted percentages are discarded. Every student starts at 0 XP and earns their way to a final letter grade through visible effort — attendance, participation, hands-on Missions, and iterative revision. Output quality alone cannot substitute for showing up and engaging; effort alone cannot substitute for doing the work. The two are scored separately and combined deliberately.

Presence & Engagement — 250 XP

Attendance (100) + quality-tiered participation (150) across all 24 sessions.

Weekly Missions × 7 — 210 XP

Seven 30–60-minute hands-on tasks, 30 XP each. Never more than an hour of take-home work in a week.

Major Assignments × 3 — 510 XP

Digital Toolkit Portfolio (150) · AI Professional Ethics & Practice Portfolio (180) · Capstone (180).

Plus a 20-XP Growth Loop for revising Missions and a 10-XP Peer Feedback bonus — 1000 XP total. Full mechanics, including how passivity caps your ceiling, are in Syllabus Section 3.

Why This Matters

A student who submits flawless work but stays silent in class cannot multiply their way into a top tier — the Engagement Multiplier makes that ceiling structural, not a deduction. And a student having a hard week has Grace Tokens, Wildcards, and the Growth Loop built in. The system rewards sustainable effort, not burnout, and it rewards showing up as much as it rewards getting it right.
